Rhodes Memorial: History, Views, and Visitor Guide

Rhodes Memorial view

One evening, driving back from Cavendish Square, my fiancé asked, “Want to go to Rhodes Memorial?” Before I could answer we were already turning off toward the park.

We arrived about thirty minutes before the park closed, just in time to take in the last light. The area was alive with activity: runners, cyclists, and people climbing the steps, all moving through the space while I stood and took in the breathtaking scene.

The view from the memorial is spectacular — Table Mountain rises in the background, the city stretches out below, and the memorial itself makes for a striking focal point.

There’s a small restaurant on the site that, sadly, was closed when we visited. It’s another reason to return — to enjoy lunch with that incredible panorama.

Even in those brief moments, the place felt special. The mix of everyday motion and timeless landscape made the visit memorable. We wandered a little, watched people enjoying the outdoors, and lingered as the light shifted over the mountain and the city. It’s an easy stop that packs a lot into a short visit: history, architecture, and a view that rewards the short climb.

Next time we’ll plan to arrive earlier so we can sit at the restaurant, soak up the atmosphere, and stay until sunset. For anyone passing through the area, Rhodes Memorial is worth the detour — whether for a quick photo, a short walk, or a relaxed meal with one of Cape Town’s best views.
