We’ve been enjoying the extra sunlight that comes with summer, but along with brighter days comes more cleaning. Suddenly dust and smudges are impossible to ignore, and those windows that let in all that light need attention. If you want to make the most of the sun, clear, streak-free windows are a must.
If the strong-scented, chemical cleaners of the past put you off, here’s a simple, natural alternative: a one-ingredient homemade window cleaner made from organic black tea. It’s gentle, free of dyes, ammonia, and synthetic fragrances, and it cleans without the harsh fumes of many store-bought products.

Homemade Window Cleaner
Organic black tea works well on glass and also refreshes blinds and wooden surfaces—its natural tannins help revive wood surfaces without resorting to chemical polishes. Because it’s free of artificial additives, it’s a safer option for household use around family and pets.

To make the cleaner, steep several black tea bags in boiling water and allow the brew to cool completely before transferring it to a spray bottle. Steeping time isn’t critical for cleaning purposes—just let it sit until it’s no longer hot before handling. When I tested this method, impatience nearly led me to spray piping-hot tea, so be sure it’s cool first.
For drying, you can use either a reusable cloth or paper towels. A cloth is better for the environment and can work well, but some people find paper towels give a streak-free finish more easily—try both and choose what works best for you.

One small caution: because tea is mildly acidic, avoid using this solution on car exteriors or painted surfaces where it could cause discoloration or dulling over time. It’s best reserved for household windows, mirrors, and blinds.
With this simple tea-based cleaner on hand, you’ll be ready to tackle pollen, fingerprints, and seasonal grime—so let the kids get messy; you’ve got the solution ready.
