Easy Keto Philly Cheesesteak Skillet

I picked this recipe because my family would enjoy it, and because it’s easy to adapt. As someone who eats mostly carnivore these days, it’s simple to tweak while keeping the same great flavor.
This skillet Philly cheesesteak delivers the flavors of the classic sandwich with far less work and far fewer carbs.

Ingredients you will need for this recipe

  • Flank steak
  • Olive oil
  • Salt & pepper
  • Onion powder and garlic powder
  • Mushrooms
  • Green bell pepper
  • Provolone cheese

An ovenproof skillet works best; my favorite for recipes like this is a two-handled cast iron pan. The extra handle makes it easier to move the skillet in and out of the oven.

Tips and tweaks for making this low-carb skillet dish

A great family recipe should be flexible. Here are easy variations to try:

  • Use leftover steak or roast beef: thinly slice and skip most of the searing and cooking steps.
  • Serve as a sandwich: toast keto buns or make chaffles and pile the cheesesteak on top.
  • Substitute cheeses: if you don’t have provolone, a mix of cheddar and mozzarella works well.
  • No ovenproof skillet? Use a 9 x 12 casserole pan for the baking step.
  • Following a carnivore plan? Omit the green peppers and mushrooms for a meat-only version.

Keto Philly Cheesesteak Skillet Recipe

This easy keto Philly cheesesteak skillet is a fast weeknight meal that comes together in about 30 minutes with only 2 net carbs. Family friendly and cooked in one pan, it keeps cleanup simple.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb flank steak
  • 1 1/2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 5 white mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, diced
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a small bowl, combine salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder; set aside.
  3. Thinly slice the flank steak across the grain, about 1/8 inch thick.
  4. Heat the olive oil in a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Add the steak and sprinkle with the spice mix. Allow to sear without moving for 2–3 minutes.
  6. Increase heat to high and turn the steak every couple of minutes until well cooked and crispy, about another 10 minutes.
  7. Transfer the cooked steak to a plate, leaving the pan juices behind. Add the mushrooms and peppers to the skillet and cook about 3 minutes. (Skip this step for a carnivore version.)
  8. Remove the skillet from the heat, return the steak to the pan, and mix with the vegetables.
  9. Arrange provolone slices over the skillet so the ingredients are covered.
  10. Place the skillet in the oven for about 5 minutes to melt the cheese.
  11. Optional: broil for an additional 2–3 minutes to brown the top.

Notes

  • Make this with leftover steak or roast beef by thinly slicing and skipping most of the searing.
  • Serve on keto buns or chaffles for a sandwich-style meal.
  • Swap provolone for a cheddar-mozzarella blend if preferred.
  • If you don’t have an ovenproof skillet, transfer ingredients to a 9 x 12 casserole pan for baking.
  • To make a carnivore-friendly version, omit the peppers and mushrooms.
